For LGBTQ women of color studying dance, women’s health, or education, the Deloris Carter Hampton scholarship should be at the top of the list. The scholarship supports those who are leaders and active in the LGBTQ community.

Who is Deloris Carter Hampton?

Deloris Carter was born in 1934 in the home city of the famed Tuskegee Institute, a private, historically black land-grant university in Tuskegee, Alabama. Its students would come by to purchase groceries and eat at a restaurant owned by her family. She was significantly influenced by the school and its desire to fulfill the dreams of people of color like herself. When she graduated from high school, she enrolled at Tuskegee to major in physical education and dance. Her dream was to become a dancer and dance for the renowned Martha Graham troupe in New York City.

Little did she know that her goals and Tuskegee degree would take her around the world. At first, she became a teacher like her mother, gaining a position in Huntsville, Alabama. Soon after, she found love and a rewarding job in upstate New York. There she met Captain George Hampton, who would soon become her husband, and she was able to teach and dance. Her husband’s position took them to Germany, where he was stationed, and their son George was born. Five years later, while deployed in Korea, the couple added a daughter to the family: Sydni. Eventually, the family returned to the U.S. and made their home in Prince William County, VA.

Deloris displayed her dedication to teaching throughout her life by spending 27 years as a phys ed instructor in the Prince William County public school system. During this time, her students saw a beloved teacher, friend, wife, and mother to all she met. She didn’t stand on the sidelines; instead, she became an activist to fight for civil rights within her community and the state. Her positions included her membership in the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, a founding member of Women in Community Action (WICA), past president of the Fairfax County Retired Educators Association, and an active member of the Good Shepherd United Methodist Church.

To perpetuate the dreams of young LGBTQ women of color, Ms. Hampton’s son, George M. Hampton Jr, created the Deloris Carter Hampton scholarship in memory of his beloved mother after her sudden death. Since 2001, it has been bestowing money upon young women who blend Deloris’ love of dance, education, and women’s issues.
